Leap
in the Dark-- Very few youg Indian
artists are struggling to create something
new with their modern sensibility. When
I say modern, Modern means post ‘Pereistroieka’
period. The world around us suddenly has
changed in last few years, both politically
as well as emotionally. Very few artists
however are able to understand and assimilate
the new experience, the new |
|
experience means divorce from old symbolism
and an unromantisized evocation of the
past. This requires strong mind and ability
to withstand the nostalgic pressure, which
often drives you to depression. This kind
of rare ability is seen in Vaishali’s
painting career of last few years. This
young artist has a subtle mind of a thinker
and she has an original expression.
What
she does as her style or what technique
she applies as her technique is little
less important for me. What is more significant
is she is able to catch one of the unseen
yet experienced dimension called "THE
TIME" which oscillates within
her paintings. I was astonished when I
first encountered with Vaishali’s one
of the paintings;, though painted on a
square canvas it was able to reflect circular
motions of time all over. The time, like
a flowing wind and/or some time like oozing
fluid which encompasses everything and
has eaten away all that great history
and is engulfing away second, our present
is the genesis of Vaishali’s art.
She
freezes the time and unfolds it as if
excavated fossilized wind, which was buried
under the earth a few thousand years back.
It is very interesting to note here that
the subject matter of her art is, the
day to day events that happen in every
middle class family, in the one room kitchen
apartment of the new metropolitan culture,
in city like Mumbai. "My middle class
family experience inspired me to paint;
says Vaishali. The frame of the door and
the household interactions inside, therefore
became for me the buried world. I started
exploring and excavating my own day to
day experiences" To me, Vaishali’s art
is more like a ‘leap in the dark’, towards
a journey of self-discovery. The figures
and forms that she draws fade away under
the wrinkled texture that she deliberately
uses as a medium and then what stands
out is the form of the fourth dimension
– ‘the time’. " The figures are the ‘Sagun–Sakar’
and the time that reflects is the ‘Nirgun’
Nirakar’ and in between is my routine,
mundance and repetitive middle class life,
that’s how I look at it" Vaishali sums
up.
